Dear Patient and Friend,
Ask a group of people where they hold their stress, and you’ll get a variety of answers. Some carry it in their stomach, some in their head, some in their neck and shoulders, and some in their low back.
But really, the stress may show up in these places in your body or others, but the origin of the stress is your brain.
Your brain has to be able to adapt to the conditions. Notice, almost everyone will tell you they hold their stress somewhere – few will say they don’t have stress at all. This is because everyone’s brain is under constant demand, to run the body, to respond to environmental factors, to be constantly vigilant and alert to watch out for danger and capitalize on opportunity.
Anything you can do to help your brain cope better with stress is by definition good for your health. Meditation, yoga, exercise, good diet and chiropractic care are only a few examples of good lifestyle decisions you can choose to make your brain healthier.
You may not be able to eliminate all stress from your life, but you can get your mind and body in the best working order to deal with it. Design your lifestyle for optimal health and wellness – you’ll be glad you did!

Dear Patient and Friend,
February is a great month for lovers to express themselves to each other. But did you know that love also has health benefits?
Love is more than just an emotion of affection and attachment. It’s also a virtue, including kindness, compassion, and concern for others. As such, love encourages positive emotions and sensations. It also stimulates laughter, great for both physical and mental wellbeing.
At psychcentral.com, Carmelia Raye says love is a “powerful antidote to fight stress, conflict and pain both mentally and physically. Love also has the power to heal and renew one’s mental, emotional and physical well being. Research shows that loving acts neutralize the kind of negative emotions that adversely affect immune, endocrine and cardiovascular function.”
Psychotherapist and health administrator Dr. Jodi Prohofsky says, “Endorphins are the key… Love triggers the hormone oxytocin which makes us feel good. It also lowers the levels of stress chemicals in our system. Physical contact like cuddles, hugs and kisses trigger the production of oxytocin.”
This sounds technical, but all it really means is that love turns on healing and “feel-good” chemicals in your body – so spread the love around, and let people show their love in return! It makes us all happier and healthier.

Dear Patient and Friend,
In the winter, when the temperature goes down, it’s especially important to take good care of ourselves. Remember that antibiotics are only effective on bacterial infections, not viral infections like colds and flu – www.flu.gov offers the following strategy for treating a cold or flu without medication:

Dear Patient and Friend,
We all love giving and receiving gifts in the holiday season – such gestures of love are invariably appreciated, and there‘s no better way to celebrate a happy occasion than with generosity and gratitude.
But even the wealthiest among us would not be able to enjoy their fortunes without good health. Your health may well be your most precious asset, because in the absence of your health, it would be impossible for you to get the most out of all of your other resources.
Consider health-related holiday presents like yoga classes, exercise equipment, running shoes, or health club memberships. Healthy recipe books, superfood bars, cleanses or nutritional supplements can serve as healthy stocking stuffers. You can even plan healthy vacations, built upon fun outdoor activities or some aspect of healthy lifestyle, like sailing, martial arts, meditation or skiing.
At this wonderful time of year, please remember to offer the gift of health to those you care about, and bring them to your doctor of chiropractic for a check- up. Some may be showing the signs of stress, while others may just need some wellness lifestyle recommendations, but either way, this is one gift you can give that will keep on giving.

Dear Patient and Friend,
The holidays are about getting together with loved ones and, of course, enjoying delicious holiday foods. But too often, we find ourselves falling to the trap of poor eating habits, a mistake that is easily corrected with a few good decisions and a little self control.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (eatright.org) makes these recommendations for better holiday eating.
- Make realistic goals. For most of us, the holiday season is usually not the best time to increase your stress by trying to lose weight. Plan accordingly.
- Use smaller plates if possible at your buffet table.
- Eat a healthy snack before going to a party so you’re not as hungry.
- Conversation is calorie-free, but move away from the buffet so you won’t be tempted to eat absent-mindedly while you talk.
- Scope out the buffet before you step up to make your selections, to avoid overloading your plate.
- Balance what you eat at parties with what you eat during the day.
- Remember that beverages contain calories as well. Cocktails, beer and wine, home-made punches and chocolaty drinks tend to have sneaky calories you may not expect. Consume these in moderation!
- Watch your portion sizes, and take small “tastes” of high calorie dishes.
In this holiday season, put the right emphasis on food, and more on the relationships with the people you love. If you concentrate on the joy of the season, you’ll be less compelled to overeat. Follow these simple guidelines, and you’ll be eating healthy for the holidays!

Dear Patient and Friend,
Many patients are attracted to chiropractic because they had a painful problem and wanted a safe, all-natural drug-free way to get well. Some tried other approaches to address their condition, and ended up with chiropractic as the proverbial “last resort” which finally helped them.
It’s normal for people to go to doctors to help them through a health crisis – doctors of medicine, osteopathy, chiropractic, dentistry and other fields are accustomed to patients coming in to be treated on an emergency basis.
But the chiropractic approach is somewhat different – the chiropractor often does not directly treat your condition, but rather is focused on helping the nerve system to do a better job running the body. It’s up to the brain and the brain’s wiring system, the nerve system, to send messages throughout the body to direct the healing process, and chiropractors find where this nerve control is disrupted and correct it to restore normal function.
That’s why chiropractors help people with all different kinds of problems – because removing interference in the nerve system affects every aspect of the body’s function that is under nerve control, and that’s almost everything.
It’s also the reason why you don’t have to wait until you have a health problem before you consult a doctor of chiropractic – by keeping your brain, nerve system and spine healthy, you improve your body’s ability to function and heal itself.
Get regular check-ups for yourself and your family at your chiropractor’s office – it keeps your brain and body working together to keep you healthy!
