Dear Patient and Friend,
Holidays of gratitude like Thanksgiving give us more than an opportunity to demonstrate our appreciation.
Modern science is proving that gratitude actually helps us to live longer, and with a better quality of life. Most of us realize the detrimental effects of stress, and gratitude is being shown to reduce our stress.
On webMD.com, University of California Davis psychology professor and gratitude researcher Dr. Robert Emmons, says that “feelings of thankfulness have tremendous positive value in helping people cope with daily problems.”
Grateful people have healthier immune systems, so they get sick less often, and get better faster when they do. That‟s because people with a positive attitude produce more protective blood cells than those who are more pessimistic, studies show.
So, it seems that gratitude has real health rewards! Here are four simple steps to help you be more grateful and get those health benefits.
Make a gratitude journal, and make regular entries to remind and focus yourself on what you have to be thankful for.
Write a list of the assets in your life, and see if you take any for granted, so you stay mindful of your blessings.
Monitor your self-talk, and communicate better with yourself, so you can maintain your balance and good attitude in times of duress.
Choose a better way to deal with adverse situations – after all, you feel differently if you look at who’s in the diaper than you do if you look at what’s in the diaper.
Get into the habit of noticing the good things in your life and appreciating them – not only does it make you nicer to be around, it could increase your longevity and give you a better quality of life.

Dear Patient and Friend,
One of the major chiropractic educational institutions, Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, partnered with the Gallup organization to study the use of chiropractic care in our society, and the results are glowingly positive.
Gallup says this is the first time that the behaviors of chiropractic patients have been studied in this detail. They state, “Chiropractic care focuses on neurological and musculoskeletal health, and aims to favorably affect overall health and well-being, relieve pain and infirmity, enhance performance, and improve quality of life without drugs or surgery.”
They discovered that almost half of the US has seen a chiropractor at some time, with 33 million Americans visiting their doctors of chiropractic in the last year. They found that patients are four times more likely to visit a chiropractor for neck or back pain than either a physical therapist or a massage therapist.
Among the 5442 participants in the study, about two thirds of them reported a positive overall impression of chiropractors, with only 11% disagreeing, the rest being neutral. The majority felt that chiropractors were trustworthy and had their patients’ best interests in mind, and less than 10% disagreed with that.
These kinds of research studies show that chiropractors have a great reputation, with high marks in patient satisfaction and clinical effectiveness. You can visit and refer to your doctor of chiropractic with confidence – your neighbors do.

Dear Patient and Friend,
The New Year may begin January 1, but for families all over the world, the calendar revolves around the school year. So, when school begins, it’s an important reminder to check in on some important habits, for children and parents alike.
First, get enough sleep. Adults need at least seven hours, while kids need even more. Sleep is when your brain recovers from the day’s activities – get to bed at a reasonable time, and keep your bedrooms dark and quiet. The hours that you are asleep before midnight are more important than the early morning hours. Get the school year started right by getting sufficient rest.
Eat a healthy breakfast – after a good night’s sleep, you want to give your mind and body good fuel to burn. Avoid sugary and salty fried foods, and choose instead organic fruits like bananas, apricots, pears, pink grapefruit, Crenshaw melon, peaches, cantaloupe, green or red grapes, oranges, or applesauce. Try a vegetable smoothie with added protein or sugar-free cereals with Almond, Oat or Rice milk, raisin bread, or potato pancakes. Add Swiss or Cheddar cheese to a piece of toasted rye bread or English Muffins. Try oatmeal with organic raisins, tangy dates and crunchy pecans, topped with fruit and Almond milk. Kids need energy, and a healthy meal to begin the day makes good sense. These same foods make a healthy snack when you are feeling tired, hungry, or craving junk food.

Dear Patient and Friend,
Did you know that there are many different types of chiropractors, and many styles of chiropractic practice? Some chiropractors concentrate primarily on the alignment of your spine, while others may pay more attention to your skull, your neck, your organs, your eyes, your blood chemistry, your diet, or reducing your stress levels.
Why are there so many kinds of doctors of chiropractic? All chiropractors share a common desire – to get your brain and body working together so you can heal from illnesses and painful problems and continue to get healthier and healthier.
But there are many ways to do that, and no one doctor can master all of them, any more than a medical doctor could master all of medicine or surgery – MDs divide up the body by organs, while chiropractors divide it up by ways to improve the connection between brain and body, and to reduce brain stress. Chiropractors pick the style that works best for them to produce the best results possible with their patients.
Some chiropractic doctors use a firm adjusting style, while others use a softer touch. Some adjust with their hands, while others use adjusting instruments. Some adjust the lower part of the spine, some focus on the upper part, and some adjust your whole body. Just like there are dozens of ways to surgically repair a damaged shoulder or knee, so too chiropractors have a wide variety of tools they can use.
Talk to Dr. Wendy about the work she does and how it helps you. You’ll find that she wants to educate you and share with you – and maybe inspire you to become a doctor of chiropractic yourself. It’s one of the most interesting, fun and worthwhile careers you could choose, with many ways to practice, and many kinds of patients to serve.

Dear Patient and Friend,
For much of your health care, you know which professionals to visit. For problems with your teeth, you go to your dentist. For broken bones, it’s your orthopedist. If you have a heart condition, you consult a cardiologist.
These providers are well-versed in dealing with the diseases within their specialty and what to do about them, and thank goodness they can do that. But who is the expert you ask about health and wellness? Every family has health and wellness issues to contend with, and opportunities to capitalize on, that are not really part of the expertise of these other doctors.
For example, who helps you decide how to feed yourself and your family healthfully? Who recommends the right exercise programs, the right stress relaxation programs, the right detoxification and ideal body weight programs? Who coaches you on how to choose lifestyle habits that improve your health and well-being and avoid those that diminish it?
Your doctor of chiropractic is trained in nutrition, exercise and body mechanics and the overall reduction of brain and nerve system stress. When you’re building your team of most trusted health and wellness advisors, it’s wise to include your chiropractor – he or she can help you live a longer, healthier and happier life, and suggest other health and wellness practitioners who can add years to your life and life to your years.

Dear Patient and Friend,
Most people agree that being healthy is more than just feeling okay. Being healthy means having a sense of physical, emotional and social well-being, and not only the absence of sickness.
Healthy people everywhere are not settling for only a feeling of being not sick – they are choosing healthy habits to move themselves beyond not sick, into glowing, vibrant good health.
In fact, there’s a whole field of study, referred to as “wellness,” which includes many different kinds of health professionals and related services. Wellness occurs when you make lifestyle decisions that lead to even better health.
Examples of such lifestyle decisions could include a healthier diet, more sleep, drinking more water, regular exercise, doing yoga, meditation, or reducing your brain stress with chiropractic care.
Which of these healthy habits you pick up is a personal choice – but every time you do something deliberately to make yourself healthier, you are practicing wellness.
There are, of course, some aspects of our health that we cannot control – that’s why it’s so important to control what you can, and to develop a lifestyle that helps you get the most out of your life.
Your doctor of chiropractic is one of your best resources for health and wellness information. Consult your chiropractor and ask for some recommendations to improve your lifestyle and become more well.
