This time of year, most of us are thinking about personal growth, and the goals, objectives and intentions for the New Year – it’s our nature to think about what we can do to improve our lives.
For some of us, it’s knocking off a few pounds. For others, it’s finally quitting smoking. Still others choose to exercise to get into better physical condition, or to pick up yoga, Pilates or martial arts. Some develop a meditation practice, decide to spend more time communing with nature, or just sit quietly to relax.
Have you noticed how many of our New Year’s resolutions revolve around our health? Learning to manage our health and wellness habits can be a heavy lift, but it’s worth it, and what better time to make some decisions than at the start of a new year?
And don’t forget to include your doctor of chiropractic, your most trusted health and wellness advisor – she can help you make better lifestyle decisions, to enhance the quality of your life. Visit Dr. Wendy Lanser, DC, and ask how often you need to stop in to stay at your best.
We’ve all watched kids at play – they’re fearless, hurling their bodies around, jumping back up from skateboard falls, bicycle collisions, football tackles or assorted trips and stumbles.
They may seem like they’re rubbery and resilient, but too often, the jarring impact they suffer shows up later in life, as weaknesses or damage that can be traced back to childhood.
So what is a concerned parent’s best course of action?
Never ignore a child’s complaint – if your kid says something is bothering him or her, take it seriously, better safe than sorry, get it checked out.
Keep an eye on your kids while playing – sometimes they may sustain a pretty significant trauma, but they forget to tell you. Ask about any bruises, limping or other signs of injury — and be persistent, find out what happened.
And, bring your family to your chiropractor for periodic check-ups – if there’s anything wrong, your doctor of chiropractic can find it and offer whatever corrective advice is called for.
Frequently, the health challenges and problems adults may face began with injuries in early life that were never addressed properly. Give your children an advantage – watch them closely through their developmental years, and get them checked regularly by your family chiropractor.
Many of you have probably heard that we only use 10% of our brain, but this is completely untrue. After all, do you only use a tenth of your stomach, your muscles, your eyes, or any of your other organs? Then why your brain?
Our body is designed perfectly, without extra moving parts that have no reason to be there. According to Yale Medical School neuroscientist Dr. Steven Novella, we use all of our brain – we just may not yet understand how all of the brain functions.
But tremendous progress is being made at understanding how the brain works, and at the forefront of this research is Dr. Heidi Haavik, director of the Center for Chiropractic Research in New Zealand, and author of “The Reality Check.” The early returns on her most recent studies demonstrate that chiropractic adjustments improve brain health, and people who get regular chiropractic care are more likely to have healthier brains.
We’re still at the beginning of understanding the brain, but common sense tells us that proper eating, sleeping, hydration, avoidance of trauma and reducing toxicity will help your brain to work better. Add in chiropractic care, and you increase your chances for a healthy brain, and therefore, a healthier life.
All of your brain is available for your use, not just 10% — and if you want it to work at its best, take good care of it, and it will reward you for the effort.
Over the years, the sun has gotten a bad rap, suspected to cause aging and in some cases, skin cancer. But it turns out that, unless you overdo it beyond logic and reason, the sun is actually good for you. A moderate amount of sunshine improves your health, not only emotionally, but physically as well.
Exposure to natural sunlight causes the body to produce Vitamin D, which is essential for good health – it reduces inflammation, lowers blood pressure, builds muscle, and even enhances brain function.
Insufficient amounts of Vitamin D may lead to heart disease, prostate cancer, and mental illness.
The research suggests that 10-15 minutes daily of sunshine is enough to make these differences. Those who get regular sunlight are less likely to suffer depression or seasonal affective disorders, and are more likely to sleep better every night.
Choose lifestyle habits that add to your wellness – get outside, and take a walk, go for a swim, jog around the block, or at least park your car a distance from your office and cover the remaining ground on foot. Ask Dr. Wendy about mineral based sunscreen that is effective and feels nice on your skin.
The investment you make in simple habits like these will pay dividends, and help you to live a longer, happier and healthier life.
Surely you’ve seen a baby start to walk – at first, unsteadily, the child can hold onto a low surface and stand with help. Soon, they can easily pull themselves up on anything within reach. And then, at a magical time, the baby takes those first few steps – beautiful!
And if that were the end of it, it would be a happy story indeed – but unfortunately, along the way to becoming proficient at walking there might be many instances where the baby loses his or her balance, and tumbles to the floor. Mostly, these falls are inconsequential – but from time to time, there is a small injury which goes unnoticed, and this can be the start of trouble for our youngsters.
If any of those little bumps and bruises also cause an insult to the spine and nerve system, which happens more often than you realize, it can turn into a big health problem, either in later childhood or even into adulthood.
For this reason, smart parents have their children checked periodically by their family doctor of chiropractic. Why gamble with your family’s health? A simple exam can reassure you that everything is fine, or if not, usually kids heal so fast, it’s much easier to address it before it blows up into a real issue.
Be thorough in safeguarding your family’s well-being – include regular chiropractic checkups, and you’ll be delighted with the results.
